Bear bile tree, also known as Hoang Lien oo ro or psyllium, is a precious herb with great healing properties. Because of its bitter taste, it is called bear bile. Bear bile is cool-loving, so it is distributed mainly in the northern mountainous areas. The tree is woody, 4-6 inches tall. The leaves are compound, alternate, with serrated edges. Flowers in clusters are pale yellow. Bear bile fruit is green, turns brown when ripe, each fruit contains 3-5 seeds. Parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, roots, and fruits, can be used to treat diseases.

The provinces with the most of these medicinal plants are Son La, Hoa Binh and Dien Bien. To have a bear bile tree large enough to make medicine, we have to wait for the tree to be 5 years old.

After being collected, the bear bile tree will be processed by splitting or slicing and then drying. The stem and roots are pale yellow when sliced.
